Artist Statement:
In my zine, I was trying to create a fun, colorful coupon book filled with funny tidbits and things I like. I wanted to communicate humor and surrealism, as well as softly critique consumerism and what couponing says about the capitalist society we live in. My original plan was to create something cohesive and similar looking to an actual coupon book or clip-out coupons you would find in a newspaper—a bit more simplistic than my final product. However, when I went to actually create each coupon I found myself enjoying using more editing features and tools in Illustrator and Photoshop, which led me to abandon my original aesthetic goal and create something a bit more outlandish and less realistic. My experience with Photoshop has been limited to using it for photo editing and retouching, and I have no experience with Illustrator. While making this zine I learned I enjoy the process of creating much more when I abandon my aesthetic visions and instead opt to allow myself to have fun with whatever new medium I am exploring. If I were to create another zine, I would most likely design one with a more consistent visual theme, but since this was the first one I have created digitally I am glad I allowed myself to experience and explore all the many tools and directions I can go in using photoshop and Illustrator.
