Projection Mapping Final

Artist Statement
In my final project, I set out to create a display of the paradoxical nature of the holiday season in recent years, shedding light on the rampant overconsumption that is encouraged within society as an integral part of holiday festivities. Through the dynamic mediums of projection mapping and VJing, I aimed to provoke contemplation on the consequences of this consumerist and hollow behavior.
By employing projection mapping techniques, I transformed the familiar scene of holiday gift boxes into canvases, projecting a narrative that intertwines the aesthetics of the holiday season with the stark reality of excessive consumerism. I aimed to make the piece feel empty and insincere, just as are the intentions of the seemingly endless digital figures and brands pushing often useless items onto consumers to buy for their loved ones.
VJing, as an integral component of the project, allowed me to manipulate and synchronize visuals in real time, creating an interactive and engaging experience for the audience. I sought to juxtapose the attention-grabbing and bright visuals one would often see while doom-scrolling through holiday "gift guides" with imagery that highlights the environmental and social impact of overindulgence.
In conclusion, this final art project is a testament to the potential of art to provoke thought and inspire change, even if simply inspiring a thought: "Do I need this?" By utilizing video mapping and VJing, I aimed to create an immersive experience that challenges our perceptions of the holiday season, inviting viewers to unwrap the layers of overconsumption and contemplate the true meaning of celebration in a world grappling with the consequences of excess.
